Mozambique: Former President Chissano defends "other ways" of approaching terrorism
The Mozambican parliament announced yesterday that it will have a budget of around 1.5 billion meticais (EUR 20.9 million) in 2018, increasing its expenditure “significantly”, although returning a 400 million meticais deficit.
Speaking at the end of a session of the Assembly of the Republic Standing Committee , spokesman Mateus Katupha said that, despite the increase, Mozambican parliamentary accounts for 2018 are in line with the need for austerity laid down by the government.
“All the containment measures recommended by the Government were taken; the production and productivity context, the exchange rate differences and the economic growth itself were analysed,” said.
The budget for the operation of parliament in 2018 represents a significant increase on this year’s budget, but will have a deficit of 400 million meticais (5.5 million euros).
“There is growth,” said Katupha, but without specifying how much. “The Board of Directors of the Assembly of the Republic presented an analysis of significant growth,” he said.
The parliamentary budget is intended to enable the entity to carry out its legislative production tasks and oversight of governmental activity, and create the conditions for institutional relations and international relations.
“The Assembly of the Republic has had to reformulate itself to satisfy current demands,” Katupha added.
The budget proposal still has to be discussed with the government before being approved in plenary session, along with the State Budget and 2018 the Economic and Social Plan.
