A Mozambican man believed to be in his 30s was found dead after being run over by a train at the Doornfontein Station, Johannesburg on 4 April.
Details around his death have not been established, however, speculation of a horror accident is rife.
According to reports, at about 3.30pm, Metrorail security personnel were alerted to the incident and immediately brought train activity at the station to a halt. This resulted in thousands of commuters being left stranded while the necessary measures to preserve the scene were taken.
The unidentified man is said to have sustained multiple fractures to his limbs and head after allegedly being struck by a Shosholoza Meyl passenger train travelling from Park Station.
An associate of the deceased told City Buzz that at about 3.40pm, he received a call from the deceased’s number. To his horror, however, not from the deceased himself. “I received a call from someone who called me by name to tell me that he recovered [the deceased’s] cellphone and that he was dead,” said Alexandra [surname withheld], who met the deceased last year.
“We lived together in Spruit (located in the East Rand) and as far as I knew, he was a hawker, but he never troubled anybody.”
Detectives are on the scene and have cordoned off the area around the body. Train activity has, however, been restored, although to the dismay of a number of commuters who can be seen traversing the railway area on foot.
Further details will be provided as more information becomes available.
