Ambassador Bernardo Nunes Albino Zaqueu died on Thursday in a hospital in Algiers, capital of Algeria, where he was nearing the term of his diplomatic mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique.
Throughout his intense career, Zaqueu served as Deputy High Commissioner for the Republic of Mozambique in the United Kingdom and assigned Chargé d’affaires for the official opening of the Mozambican diplomatic representation in Brazil after having served in our country’s embassies in The United Nations, Zimbabwe, China and Russia.
Prior to the mission in Algeria, Zaqueu served as Chief of Staff and Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Director of the Africa and Middle East Directorate (DAMO), Director of the Americas Directorate and Director of the Department of Studies, Planning and Information(DEPI ).
President of the Republic of Mozambique Joaquim Chissano awarded Ambassador Bernardo Zaqueu the Honours Diploma for his excellent contribution to the organisation and preparation of the 2nd Summit of the African Union held in Maputo in July 2003.
Bernardo Zaqueu was one of the first bachelors of the then newly created Higher Institute of International Relations (ISRI), at the time overseen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
