In the first half of this year, Mozambican authorities stopped more than 500 foreign nationals entering the country on fake visas, National Migration Service spokesperson Cira Fernandes told a regular weekly press briefing in Maputo on Thursday.
An additional estimated 800 individuals were also denied entry on various grounds.
“We denied entry to 1,337 individuals, of whom 521 were in possession of false visas,” Fernandes said.
The group with false visas comprised Ethiopians, Bengalis and Somalis, she explained.
“Compared to the same period of last year, denial of entry on the basis of false visas increased by about 24 percent, that is, 422 persons were refused entry in 2016,” SENAMI spokesperson said.
Fernandes added that Mozambique was in contact with authorities in these countries in order to discover the source of the false visas.
“Citizens of these countries regularly try to enter Mozambique, so we have been in contact with the authorities,” she said.
The spokesperson called on all foreign nationals wishing to enter Mozambique to apply for entry visas only at Republic of Mozambique diplomatic or consular offices.
