The athletes who won gold and bronze medals in the African beach volleyball tournament in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo last Sunday, have good reason to be happy – as is the whole country.
Mozambican duo Arsénio Nuvunga and Jorge Monjane won the gold medal after 10 games and the same number of victories. In the ‘finalissima’, the men’s pair defeated South Africa by two sets to one and they will represent the continent in the World Cup in China in July.
Mercia and Ana Paula took bronze in the same tournament and also made it to the World Cup.
Mercia and Ana Paula told O Paáis their bronze medal was the result of early morning training, although they had only a few days of interaction and adaptation, since one of the athletes is from the province of Manica.
National coach Osvaldo Machava said the two pairs had already shown their potential in the zone qualification games and in the World Cup Under-21 category last year, and that their achievements are indicative of the quality of national athletes.
So, the two national duos have stamped their passports for the Beach Volleyball Under-19 World Championships in Nanjing.
Nanjing, China will host 2 major volleyball events at the same time this year – FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships from June 26 to July 1 and FIVB Volleyball Nations League Women’s Finals from June 27 to July 1, 2018.#volleyball#VolleyballNationsLeague pic.twitter.com/Hgh1KOR5Cl
