The MDM in Gaza has been meeting under a mango tree since last Friday after vandals broke into their headquarters and set fire set to it.
Party members are now improvising a meeting place. “At this moment we are working under a mango tree in the same enclosure. Our headquarters is just as the vandals left it. We have not cleaned it up because we are waiting for the police to collect evidence,” Alberto Nhamuche, MDM’s provincial political delegate in Gaza province said.
According to Nhamuche, the arsonists struck at dawn, when the premises were empty. “They broke the window and entered our facilities. Then they gathered all the furniture in the conference room and set it on fire. The flames spread to other rooms and burned everything in their path.”
Nhamuche said the police were not following up on the matter properly.
“We reported the case at the police station closest to our headquarters. They it only promised that they would investigate what had happened and find those responsible. The irony is that the police did not come to our headquarters to gather evidence, but only said they would investigate,” he said.
The MDM believes that the ransacking of its headquarters was politically motivated and intended to intimidate the party.
“This is not the first time this has happened. It is possible that this has been done to affect our members in Gaza psychologically and to intimidate our party in other provinces,” Nhamuche said.
