The visiting Portuguese president told journalists he had been “pleasantly surprised” over prospects for peace in Mozambique and a rapprochement between the Frelimo government and Renamo opposition, but warned that it was “too early” to draw conclusions.
President Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists at the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo after a meeting with a Renamo parliamentary delegation attended also by Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Teresa Ribeiro.
Asked if he was more optimistic than when he began his official visit to Mozambique, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said: “I would not say optimistic, because I do not like putting the cart before the horse. But what I will say is that I have been pleasantly surprised in recent days.”
“Pleasantly surprised regarding concern for peace, concern for the economic, financial and social situation and pleasantly surprised over the desire for an approximation of views. That is the situation as I see it at the moment. If I learn something new, I will tell you,” he added.
