A man appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle 7kg of cocaine through OR Tambo International Airport, the Hawks said.
Segundo Melendez Damacina, 40, was arrested on Wednesday evening, before he was able to board a flight to Maputo, Mozambique, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.
He had arrived in the country from Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was travelling alone.
The cocaine was in his luggage, wrapped in tin foil inside cooldrink containers. It had an estimated street value of R2 million.
He would remain in custody until his bail application next Thursday.
“The Hawks are keeping drugs out of the airport. We are more vigilant now that more people are trying to smuggle drugs in. Our members are ready for them,” Netshiunda said.
