Mozambique: MUSIARTE celebrates 10th anniversary with two concerts at Maputo's Cathedral
Were he still alive, the master Malangatana would be 80 years old today. In tribute to the multifaceted artist from Marracuene, whose greatness consisted of conquering the world by exporting Mozambican culture through the product of his brush, a program called “Malangatana at 8O” is reviving the artist’s memory. It starts on the 11th of this month in his home town of Matalana in Marracuene district with a day of activities called a “Requiem for Malangatana”.
The session will start with “mhamba” spiritual evocation, followed by other activities which highlight the artist’s life and work. Distinguished names in Mozambican culture will pay tribute along with film and documentaries on Malangatana. Music, theatre and poetry events follow, with plenty of contributions by children from various quarters of society.
The activities are organized by the artist’s surviving family and the Malangatana Foundation. Facilities have been arranged for other Mozambican and foreign institutions to contribute, such as a national artists’ tribute at 14:00 p.m. today at the National Art Museum in Maputo.
Abroad, the municipality of Amadora in Portugal will honour the artist by naming a street in the Mina de Água neighbourhood after him, while on June 9, the Alcoitão 3 Basic School will change its name to Malangatana Basic School with a ceremony starting at 10:00 a.m..
