The Mozambican Dredging Company (Emodraga) lost more than a million dollars during the nine weeks the dredger ‘Macúti’ was beached in the port of Beira access channel in Sofala.
The dredger was damaged in a maritime accident in June.
The vessel, which has been refloated and was towed to the port of Beira on Sunday, will next be towed to the company’s dry dock in Beira Nave for an engine inspection.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Emodraga, Tayob Adamo, said that once that was complete, the real scope of the dredger’s rehabilitation would be determined.
Speaking to reporters in Beira, Adamov said there were funds for the repair of the ‘Macúti’, which acquired a six-metre gash in its engine room in the accident, were available, and gave assurances that access channel dredging would continue thanks to the ‘Alcântara Santos’ and ‘Aruângua’, due to arrive from Maputo and Quelimane soon.
