Macau’s population decreased in 2016 to 644,900 people, a real variation of -0.4% or 1,900 people, the first annual decline since 2009, reported the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).
The Bureau reported that the decline in population recorded in 2009 was due to the decrease in the number of non-resident workers, a situation similar to last year, in which on-year there was a real contraction of 4,008 workers.
According to the Bureau at the end of 2016 there were 177,600 non-resident workers, in Macau, with the biggest drop occurring in the construction sector, 8,800 fewer year on year, due to the successive completion of large entertainment projects.
Macau’s population at the end of 2016 consisted of 305,500 men and 339,400 women, the number of households was 189,200, a year on year fall of 3,500 units.
