The Mozambican Inspectorate-General for Labour (IGT) has uncovered widespread disregard of labour law in Maputo’s gymnasiums and hairdressing salons.
In a statement, the IGT reports that it has inspected 32 salons and eight gymnasiums, and found in most establishments “a lack of written contracts, the signing of fixed contracts without due justification, the payment of wages below the established national minimums, lack of registration of workers in the Social Security System, plus lack of holiday plan for workers and excessive workload”.
The list also includes a lack of communication on the commencement of activities, internal regulations, lack of a nominal relation of company employees, lack of a list of shifts, absence of medical examinations, absence of payrolls and absence of collective insurance.
The Inspectorate warned 14 companies to correct infringements within 15 and 30 days. In the more serious cases, 18 companies were warned and fined, while others were ordered to settle unpaid wage differentials.
