The governor of Inhambane Province, Daniel Francisco Chapo, inaugurated the KISAWA Project Marine Research Centre on Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Vilankulo District, on Tuesday, Inhambane’s Provincial Directorate for Culture and Tourism has announced.
The research unit, part of the KISAWA Project’ social responsibility investment, is valued at just over US$1 million and consists of a marine studies laboratory, dorms for centre users, and multi-purpose dining room and offices, under the management of the Centre for Scientific Studies of Bazaruto.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chapo remarked on the centre’s importance and said that he hoped it would result in research solutions relevant to the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park and the conservation of marine and terrestrial biodiversity, and prove an asset for national research institutions, in universities in particular.
The Kisawa Tourist Project is being implemented over an area of 302 hectares and will have 13 luxury villas on Benguerua, one of the five islands that make up the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park.
