Mozambique: Nyusi criticises French attitude to Cabo Delgado - AIM report | Watch
Frelimo, the ruling political party in Mozambique, said on Friday that the 41st anniversary of independence the country marked on June 25 was an opportunity to reflect on economic emancipation and the preservation of peace.
Speaking at a press conference marking both independence and the 52nd anniversary of the creation of the movement, Frelimo spokesman Antonio Niquice said: “The steps that must follow have to do with production and increased productivity. Our aim should be economic emancipation, and in agriculture we have one of the main drivers of development in our country.”
Niquice said that the immense natural resources that the country had discovered recently were another important asset in achieving economic independence and creating prosperity for the Mozambican population.
Maintaining peace and national unity, he went on to say, were also essential to preserving the achievements secured by the country’s independence on June 25, 1975.
“[For] the people of Mozambique to continue enjoying the fruits of independence, the question of peace is extremely important, so we laud the efforts initiated by the president for greater openness to dialogue and unconditional readiness for peace.”
Niquice pointed out that Frelimo’s objectives, including economic and social development and combating poverty, had been severely affected by the 16-year civil war which ended in 1992.
“We evaluate our 41 years of independence positively, taking into account the challenges imposed by a brutal and destabilizing war in the period immediately following the crisis,” Niquice added.
Asked about views expressed by senior members of the party that Frelimo may be fragile and in danger of losing the next election due to the association of its former leaders with corruption scandals, Niquice replied that “Frelimo is a party of transformation and a party that leads change”.
