The international humanitarian organisation Care announced last Thursday the completion of the reconstruction of 163 classrooms in Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, following the damage caused by cyclone Dineo in February 2017.
Care has joined forces with the public sector and other partners to address the damage caused by the bad weather.
Cyclone Dineo killed seven people and wounded more than 50 about a year ago, damaging homes and infrastructure, including 2,200 classrooms in the region, according to government figures.
Care estimates that the classrooms it has refurbished will serve 14,000 students and adds that has also rehabilitated nine health centres serving approximately 120,000 people.
The organisation points out that the new structures have been built with more resilient materials “to enable them to withstand future events” which they believe could bemore frequent due to climate change, the statement said.
“Although the resilient roof structure has required more construction time, we are confident that the new structures will be able to withstand similar cyclones in the future,” Marc Nosbach, Care’s national director in Mozambique, said.
