Residents of the Mananga neighbourhood’s “D” unit in Beira were distressed last week to find plastic bags containing pieces of a body human in their area.
Shocked residents describe the situation as worrying and unfortunate because, according to them, this is the first time this kind of thing has happened in the area.
Diário de Moçambique visited Mananga but not in time to see the package, which was taken to Beira Central Hospital morgue by a team of experts and officials from Beira Municipal the Council.
No-one has so far been charged in the case, but investigations are underway in the neighbourhood and surrounding areas to ascertain the circumstances identify the perpetrators of the crime.
The secretary of the Mananga neighbourhood “D” unit, Francisco Macongere, told our reporter that the plastic bags containing separated parts of a human body were found in the street by locals. He added that arms and legs with knee and elbow joints were visible, but separated by what was presumed to be a knife.
“We do not know where the bags came from. They were found about 2:00 p.m. last Tuesday in the street, being dragged along by a dog. A resident was passing by and saw his dog dragging the plastic bags along. Looking to see what it was, he found that it was pieces of a human body cut up. There was no head,” Macongere said, adding that the mood of residents on Tuesday was sad.
“Many people, curious as to what had happened, gathered there, but nobody had the courage to open the bags. There was a foul smell about the place, and there was not one single person who left that day who wasn’t in tears,” Macongere related.
According to Macongere, Mananga had spent about four days without energy due to a transmission breakdown, and it is thought that the individual who committed the crime had been keeping the package containing the body parts in a freezer at his home.
“I don’t think the person responsible had any other way to continue to preserve the items, and thought he would throw them out in the street. We do not know why, but it is a pitiful and disgusting situation,” Macongere commented.
Alberto Veremo, a trader, said it was unfortunate to witness human body parts quartered and placed in plastic bags. “I do not know how anyone would dare do that. The organs were removed from that spot hours later by a team of experts. A city council vehicle took the parts to the morgue at Beira Central Hospital,” he said.
Sérgio Correia, owner of the dog that discovered the bags, said the moment was one of much amazement. “I left the house for the market to buy lemon, and saw my dog with the plastic bag in its mouth. When I stopped to see what it was, I saw a human arm coming out of the bag. I was scared and pulled my dog off, then I called the police at the 11th squadron,” he explained.
Police hunt for possible perpetrators
The police authorities say they are aware of the case and are following all possible leads to detain the perpetrators of the macabre crime.
A source linked to the case said that although there had been no kidnapping reported in the area or surroundings, police were working hard to clarify the case. “It is in our interest to clarify this case. We have no leads yet, but we are doing everything to bring the perpetrators to book. This case has appalled many people in the neighbourhood,” the source said.
