Train pulling 80 wagons of magnetite from South Africa derails in Ressano Garcia, Mozambique
Four individuals attacked a village in northern Mozambique on Thursday killing two people, burning 12 houses and stealing food, a local resident told Lusa today.
The attack occurred at about 10:00 p.m. in Cobre, a village in the Quiterajo administrative post of Macomia district in Cabo Delgado province.
The attackers entered the village without the population realising it, mingling with the audience entering a hall to watch a movie. Shortly afterwards, they left the venue and began the attack on the village using machetes and firearms, the source said.
One of the victims died from machete blows, while another was shot.
Several remote settlements in Cabo Delgado, 1,500 to 2,000 kilometres north of Maputo, have been attacked by unknown assailants since October 2017, causing dozens of deaths and the displacement of much larger numbers of people.
The groups attacking the villages have never claimed responsibility or stated their agenda, but investigators suggest that the violence could be linked to heroin, ivory, ruby and wood trafficking networks.
The attacks come as investments by natural gas oil companies in the region are rolling out, but have not as yet impinged on these projects.
