Mozambique: 2024 tantalite production should be highest yet – government
Five months after the last hike, prices of fuels and other petroleum products are increasing again from this Wednesday (22) in Mozambique. Gasoline will increase by about 12 percent, diesel 13 percent and lighting oil approximately 26 percent.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, “gasoline goes from the current 50.02 meticais to 56.06 meticais a litre and diesel from 45.83 meticais to 51.89 meticais a litre.”
“Lighting oil, for its part, rises from 33.06 meticais per litre to 41.61 meticais, while domestic gas (LPG) rises from 58.54 meticais/kg to 61.08 meticais. In turn, the compressed gas (CNG) goes from 25.47 to 25.59 meticais.”
Last October Filipe Nyusi’s government raised the cost of gasoline by about 5 percent, diesel 25 percent and lamp oil 15 percent.
According to the government, the reason for the increase was related to subsidies to fuel stations which “do not fit the current reality because of the burden this subsidy represents for the cost structure of the state”.
Just like the last increase however, these increases happen at a time when the cost of a barrel of oil is low. Last Friday it was quoted at US$49.81, the lowest figure this year.
The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy emphasizes that “there is a need for the Government to begin to fully apply legislation on the matter, namely Article 67 of Decree 45/2012, of December 28, which establishes the need to revise prices to the public on a monthly basis, whenever there is a change in the base price of more than three percent, or if there is any change in taxes”.
