The secretary-general of the National Liberation Combatants Association (ACCLN) said today he has no doubt that Filipe Nyusi will be the ruling party’s candidate in the 2019 presidential elections.
“We have no doubts about this. He is our candidate in 2019 for the next five years; we have all placed our confidence in him,” Fernando Faustino says in an interview with the weekly Savana.
According to Faustino, an influential figure in the ruling party, Frelimo’s youth and women’s organisations OJM and OMM also support the re-election of the current Mozambican head of state and party president for another term.
“There is no reason why we should think of another person at this time,” the secretary-general of the ACCLN said. “The only person we have at this time to run the country, according to our party’s rules, is President Nyusi.”
Referring to the upcoming Frelimo congress, which runs from September 26 to October 1, Faustino said that the meeting would be a platform for the party president to give guidance on the course to be followed in the coming years.
“President Nyusi is going to run the congress and will give guidance on how things should go. There is continuity and there is renewal [in the party organs]: there are comrades who are going to come in and there are comrades who will leave,” Faustino added.
The ACCLN includes members of Frelimo who were part of the national liberation struggle against Portuguese colonialism from the foundation of the organisation in 1962 until its independence in 1975.
Filipe Nyusi was elected president in 2014 and invested in 2015 for a term of five years, which ends in 2019. If he is a candidate and is re-elected in 2019, it will be his last term, since Mozambique’s constitution limits the function of head of state to two terms.
