Frelimo will reject Renamo’s demand for the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the situation of the 11,000 Mozambican refugees in Malawi on the grounds that attorney general is already investigating.
The proposal will be debated next week, but media outlet Canalmoz is already aware of the Frelimo position on the matter.
“The Frelimo parliamentary benches consider that the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry to investigate the situation of refugees in Malawi is inappropriate and unnecessary,” Frelimo says.
“The Tete provincial attorney general’s office opened a case on 25 February against unknown individuals in a fact-finding process registered under number 01 / PPT / 2016. It would not be reasonable for parliament to approve the creation of a commission of inquiry to deal with a matter that is already the subject of a fact-finding process.”
Renamo’s wants an independent inquiry to ascertain why Mozambicans have taken refuge in Malawi, to visit the area the are now staying in and the areas they have fled and to present a report to parliament in the third session.
The government team headed by Deputy Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs Joaquim Verissimo recently deployed to Tete to look into alleged cases of human rights violations reported in national and foreign press is seen by many as lacking credibility.
For example, the government commission visited places where supposed armed Renamo men kidnapped community leaders, but did not visit the areas where government forces allegedly killed and tortured, burned homes and pillaged the population’s property.
