Police in Chokwe, Gaza province, have apprehended four women for allegedly attempting to abduct a child to sell to a traditional doctor for 150,000 meticais (around US$2,274 at current exchange rates).
One of those detained is the aunt of the orphan.
“In coordination with police in Maputo, it was possible to apprehend two more members of the group, one of them the aunt of the child, the younger sister of the child’s father, now deceased. The police managed to prevent the crime. The accused are now in police custody and the minor has been taken into protection. Steps will be taken for the welfare of the child,” Gaza PRM spokesman Edgar Juvane said.
