The rainwater which has flooded the Complete Elementary School Unit 22 in Maputo’s Mafalala neighbourhood has left more than 1,500 students languishing at home without classes.
The situation has obliged the Maputo Governor to take herself to the Mafalala neighbourhood to see the problem at first hand. As a result, Iolanda Cintura Seuane says that rehabilitation is the school’s principal requirement.
The Complete Elementary School Unit 22 is an example of many other schools in Maputo, as well as of what heavy rain can do.
In the current academic year, the school enrolled 1,550 students in three shifts, but now that there are no classes, the knowledge that the teachers have to give the children is being shared among them in conversations on benches.
