The Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique today elects a new member to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry investigating the public debt, and in particular, the so-called hidden debts at the centre of the suspension of financial assistance from international partners.
Deputy head of the Frelimo bench Sergio Pantie will replace Commission deputy-chairperson Edson Macuacua (Frelimo), who is leaving for reasons of “incompatibility”.
The parliamentary note that the Frelimo bench submitted on 11 October applying for the replacement of Macuácua by another member of the bench gave no reason, but a parliamentary source has told VOA that Macuácua, who also chairs the Parliament Committee on Constituitional Affairs, Human Rights and Legality, was forced to resign following the revelation of a conflict of interest in the subject investigated.
During the period in which the controversial debts were incurred, Macuacua was spokesman for then President of the Republic, Armando Guebuza, and parliamentarians feel that, as he was connected to the centre of decision-making at the time, he should not be part of the investigation.
VOA sought comment for Macuácua, who said he would respond at another time.
The Parliament Commission of Inquiry into Mozambique’s public debt was created on 27 July and Macuácua was part of the team for at least two months.
The committee consists of 17 members, nine Frelimo and one from the MDM, and is due to submit the results of its investigations by the end of this month.
The seven seats reserved for Renamo remain vacant, as the party refused to join the committee, believing it would be more transparent if it included elements from outside Parliament.
