Mozambique: Insurgents in some areas trying to gain public trust - village residents
The number of deaths on Mozambique’s roads decreased in 2016, but the figure is still “high”, according to a report from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), which Lusa consulted on Friday.
“Our country continues to have a high number of road accidents, causing death and destruction of property,” the Mozambican PGR’s 2016 annual report declares, citing data from the National Institute of Land Transport (INTT).
In 2016, 1,379 people died on the roads in Mozambique, 13 percent fewer than the 1,592 registered in 2015, a number already 24 percent below that of 2014. The total number of road accidents in 2016 also decreased by 22.3 percent on the previous year, down from 2,511 to 1,951.
These numbers are nevertheless considered high, the PGR says in its “homicides and involuntary bodily harm” report section.
“A total of 952 accidents were recorded,” the document says. Excess speed and dangerous manoeuvres were among the main causes of accidents, as in other parts of the world. The list also includes risks associated with various situations typical of the country’s daily life, such as informal roadside trading, the “poor technical condition of the vehicles” and the “increase in car parking without proper infrastructure or monitoring”.
