Anadarko’s vice president and Mozambique director Steve Wilson said yesterday that the company was monitoring cases of armed violence in the north of the country where it is investing.
“We are keeping an eye on the situation,” Wilson told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Maputo.
Speaking at the extractive sector event, Wilson confirmed the progress of the natural gas megaproject, announcing that support infrastructure was under construction.
The province of Cabo Delgado, where the project is located, has been the scene of sporadic clashes between armed groups, the public and security forces, some involving civilian casualties.
The main incident occurred in October 2017, when the village of Mocímboa da Praia was besieged by an armed group of alleged Islamist inspiration, but without clear leaders or motivation.
The Mozambique police have said that normality has been restored, and that subsequent incidents could not be definitively attributed to the same actors.
No “attacks” in Cabo Delgado, just “crimes”, say police – Mozambique
