Mozambique Elections: Police admit killing demonstrators and even apologise - Watch
O País / Frelimo's first secretary in Sofala points to recovering of the municipality of Beira as the challenge ahead for his party
Frelimo’s first secretary in Sofala, Paulo Manjacunene, is urging members of the party in Beira to put his recent re-election behind then and unite to retake Beira from the MDM.
Speaking last weekend, Manjacunene urged his supporters to stop fomenting intrigue and gossip about the recent internal elections. “Right now, it does not matter who won. What matters is to unite and work together for the development of our province and, above all, to retake Beira municipal council. Only united can we achieve this goal,” he said.
Frelimo has been in opposition in Beira since the 2003 municipal elections, when it lost to Renamo and Daviz Simango. In 2008, Daviz Simango won again as an independent, with the support of some Renamo members, and again in 2013, running for the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the party he founded in 2009.
At the end of last weekend’s meeting, Manjacunene was questioned by journalists about continuity and the current presidents of the four municipalities under Frelimo management in Sofala. He replied that the questions were premature, and the winners of internal voting for presidency of the municipalities would be made public later.
“The current Mayors are not prevented from expressing their intention to compete. So we have to wait and see what happens,” he said. But Frelimo in Sofala was very satisfied with the performance of the current municipal presidents, he said.
Dondo, Gorongosa, Nhamatanda and Marromeu municipalities in Sofala province are under Frelimo control, while Beira is being managed by the MDM.
