The district of Palma in the province of Cabo Delgado will soon have a commercial port that will meet the needs of regional development and future coastal shipping services.
This information was made public a few days ago in Maputo by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, who argued that liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects underway in northern Cabo Delgado, in addition to maritime terminals, will require large investments in access roads and air transport.
Mesquita said the government was aware of these dynamics, particularly the growth in demand at Pemba Airport, Mocímboa da Praia and other links important for the development of the region.
“The aviation segment in Mozambique is also entering a new era of liberalisation to ensure better mobility, availability and safety for travellers,” Mesquita said.
In relation to Cabo Delgado, the minister said that the government had been working with operators in the transport and communications sector to respond to the growing demand generated by the new dynamics in the province, with the aim of generating integrated development, taking into account both local communities and other stakeholders.
“We reiterate our commitment to doing everything needed for the transport and communications sectors to continue to be active partners in the implementation of established programmes so that the exploration and commercialisation LNG projects and derivatives will succeed,” the minister said.
He noted, however, that local development in the context of megaprojects in Mozambique should not be seen as a challenge for the government alone, and appealed to all economic agents, local leaders, associations and other stakeholders to step in and do their part.
The minister pointed out that the quality, regularity and efficiency of the services delivered were key elements for the integration of the various local initiatives, given the high standards that this type of enterprise demanded.
“We challenge all those interested in exploring opportunities generated by this industry to level up their skills, seek qualifications and take up the challenge of improving their performance in order to generate and develop local content,” Mesquita said.
