President of Mozambique’s College of Physicians Eugénio Zacarias has raised concerns about large number of foreign doctors contracted by the national health system who are not registered with or recognized by the college, as they should be by law.
Zacarias, who was speaking in Beira on Saturday at a Day of the Mozambican Doctor event, revealed that most of the 369 professionals working for the national health service are foreigners.
The College of Physicians (Ordem dos Médicos de Moçambique) currently has 2,850 doctors and dentists registered, of whom 699 are in arrears with their contributions.
Eugénio Zacarias says the situation is of concern to the profession.
“We are going through one of the most problematic periods in the medical history of Mozambique. The list of doctors and dentists authorized to practice medicine in the country is on the organization’s electronic database, so we would encourage Mozambicans, particularly health professionals, to report those who are practicing illegally to the competent authorities,” he said.
Going further, Zacarias announced that from June, graduate students in training in institutions which have not signed memorandums of understanding with the college will have to sit additional exams in order to practice.
Sofala WMO delegate Dario Fernandes took the opportunity to ask the government to let health professionals specialize in the city of Beira, without having to travel to Maputo.
“The conditions for successful specializations are in place locally,” he said.
Government representative and provincial Director of Education and Human Development Manuel Chicamisse praised the professionalism doctors were displaying.
Beira’s Doctor’s Day ceremonies saw awards presented to Hélder Miranda, Eduardo Matidiane and Cesar Macome for their dedication to health promotion.
