On Friday 1 January, a Chinese national, identified only as Lee, was abducted in Tete city. According to a report by A Verdade, this may be a case of mistaken identity although the abductors would allegedly have asked for a one million dollar ransom.
Lee, a local quarry worker, was allegedly abducted by a group of men posing as potential clients interested in renting a warehouse. It is believed that Lee went to meet the “clients” at the warehouse, where his abductors were waiting to ambush him.
The exact details of the abduction are not known as no eyewitnesses have come forward, however, the vehicle Lee was driving at the time was discovered abandoned near the provincial hospital.
The kidnappers have allegedly demanded US$1 million for Lee’s safe return.
Evidence suggests that the kidnappers mistook Lee for the owner of the company, identified as Arco Íris. The owner of the Arco Íris quarry is currently out of the country and had lent his car to Lee for the time being.
The PRM are yet to comment on the incident, which is believed to be the first abduction of 2016, and the first to occur in the city of Tete.
