A 28-year-old man accused of burglary has been brutally beaten by a mob in the Manga-Mascarenhas area of Beira.
The case occurred early on Monday morning, when a young man called Samuel Augusto left his home with robbery in mind.
His wife, quoted by Television Miramar, said it was her husband’s habit to wake up at dawn and leave the house without saying goodbye, but this time Augusto was set upon when he tried to break into a house and was beaten by residents.
“I woke up and noticed he was not there. It was four o’clock. I heard a noise outside and went out and saw that it was him,” she told Television Miramar.
After being beaten at the house he was allegedly attempting to rob, Augusto fled to his own home, but the crowd followed him and continued to beat him there.
Residents said they were tired of endless burglaries and that if the alleged thief had been caught at night they would have burned him alive.
