The Mozambican government’s National Inspectorate of Economic Activities has ordered the closure of the Continental Café and Restaurant in the heart of Maputo, on grounds of lack of hygiene.
This extremely well-known café, on the corner of 25th September and Samora Machel Avenues, a short walk from Maputo port, is something of a landmark, surviving all the political turmoil of the last few decades.
But when the INAE brigade visited it on Monday they found that, although the public area looked clean, the kitchens and storerooms were a threat to public health.
Cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”, INAE General Inspector Maria Freitas said the brigade had found stocks of food past their expiry date in the freezers. Rubbish had accumulated in the storerooms and corridors, and pets were allowed into the kitchen.
The sole bathroom for the café workers, and their dressing rooms were in a deplorable condition, Freitas said, and water was seeping into this part of the building.
“I must stress that whenever we detect situations that endanger public health we have no alternative but to close the establishment”, said Freitas.
The closure order was delivered to the café on Tuesday, and its owners were also fined 80,000 meticais (about 1,150 US dollars).
The owners have six months to correct the irregularities detected and to inform INAE. Only after a second inspection shows that the café is in a decent condition to serve food and drink to its customers will it be allowed to re-open.

very odd if you look at all the barakkas and car boot restaurants, pure discrimination either they did not pay the bribe or some top guy in government want the place….the BULLSHIT story of them caring for the public’s needs might have been believed 30 years ago. do they realise we laugh at this corrupt circus.
