Mozambican and Portuguese citizens to hold vigil in Lisbon against kidnappings in Mozambique
Four policemen and seven more people were killed on Thursday afternoon in a shootout in the village of Maculo, located in Mozambique’s Mocímboa da Praia district, a source from the local community radio has told Lusa today, Friday.
Police officers were patrolling the village, located in the middle of the bush near the coast, about 20 kilometres from the district headquarters of Mocímboa da Praia, when they were attacked by an armed group, reported the same source, based on the testimony of two relatives of policemen killed.
According to one of the relatives, the bodies of the police officers have already been sent to the morgue of the provincial capital, Pemba.
The other seven dead people would be elements of the group that attacked the agents, according to a village source.
Local authorities have not yet provided information on the matter, but the sources heard suspect it is the same group that has destabilised the area, in the province of Cabo Delgado.
The attack comes a week after the police stations in the village of Mocímboa da Praia were attacked by an armed group of 30 men with signs of Islamic affiliation (robes and slogans) , but which Mozambican Muslim organisations have condemned .
In the attacks last week, four other police officers, 12 attackers and a community leader have died, police said.
