Speaking along the same lines as did the Minister of Defence, Mozambique’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has also denied that Mozambique has bought arms from North Korea but admits reception of various types of support, including military.
Oldemiro Balói began by describing relations between Mozambique and North Korea as historical, recalling that Pyongyang actively supported the national liberation struggle, led by Frelimo. “After independence, North Korea stood by our side, even in difficult times,” he said.
Without specifying the dates or the type of the military support, Oldemiro Balói admitted, however, that when Mozambique “was left without conditions to resolve certain situations of a military nature, North Korea was one of the countries that were on our side”.
Not specifying the type of military support that Maputo received from Pyongyang, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation did not detail how such aid was processed. “Sanctions were imposed on North Korea and we, as a member of the United Nations, have to comply with what is determined by the Security Council. There may have been one or another inattention, but we are in the process of rectifying everything that these sanctions determine,” he explained. Balói did not make clear whether the ‘inattention’ had to do with the acceptance of support, since he denies that Mozambique bought arms to North Korea.
Despite sanctions imposed by the United Nations and the isolation of North Korea, the head of Mozambican diplomacy has said that the historical nature of relations between Maputo and Pyongyang will continue.
