Nampula Directorate of Health has admitted the possibility of deaths from cholera outside hospitals, especially in communities far from administrative posts in Netia, Mecuco, Monapo district, and in Namialo, Meconta district, where the outbreak was first reported.
Nampula provincial chief health officer Suleimane Isidoro says cholera was confirmed in February and worsened on days 14 and 15 of the outbreak, with 23 and 29 people suffering from the disease were admitted to hospital.
Initially, people believed they were confronting simple cases of diarrhea, but later diagnosis confirmed it was cholera.
“We decided to search the neighborhood, because people said someone died in this or that house from diarrhea. As a consequence, we have increased the number of cases of cholera, suggesting there were cases in the neighborhoods that were not taken to health units,” Isidoro said.
It was therefore not possible to rule out the possibility of deaths outside hospitals, he said, although fortunately there was no record of fatalities in the health units themselves.
Isidoro revealed that, overall, the number of cases had decreased over the last few days, with only 13 people hospitalized at present, 12 in Netia and one in the Namialo health center.
The health sector is also advising communities on the importance of personal and collective hygiene and treatment of water for consumption with products such as “Cortez” and chlorine, which are being distributed free of charge in health units.
“There is a certain correlation between cholera and conditions of life in communities, mainly concerning water supply.”
