Gunmen attacked a train operated by Indian mining company Jindal and carrying coal from Moatize to the Port of Beira on Wednesday, severely injuring the driver.
The attackers struck around 4:00 PM local time in Cheringoma, Sofala, central Mozambique, when the locomotive was travelling the Sena line between Lavos and Nhamitanga on its way to the Beira.
“This morning we saw the driver being evacuated to hospital with injuries,” said one resident, adding that the line is remained blocked by the locomotive.
“It is a fact, there really was an attack on the Jindal train in Cheringoma,” said another resident, who also confirmed the driver’s injury.
Sofala police spokesman Daniel Macuacua said police would comment later, information about the incident not yet having been conveyed to the provincial command.
On Monday 5, a Vale Moçambique locomotive was also machine-gunned by armed men in Caia, Sofala, but without damage. The police have neither confirmed nor denied the incident.
Mozambican police have blamed Renamo armed wing for four attacks on civilian targets in Manica and Sofala provinces last week. No damage was caused, and Renamo has not yet reacted to the claims.
