Mozambique Elections: Police admit killing demonstrators and even apologise - Watch
Voa / The burnt headquarters
Striking at dawn on Tuesday, unknown individuals set fire to the Renamo headquarters in Nampula, also the residence of a party member. The attackers used tires to burn the doors and windows, which were protected by grating.
The three people asleep inside the residence were woken by the dense smoke and escaped unharmed, but some party property, such as benches used for meetings, was destroyed.
Speaking to the press, one of the three, Carlos Gonçalves, said he did not know who had staged the attack. He said that the attackers’ intention was not only to destroy the Renamo headquarters but to kill the three asleep in the house at the time too.
Renamo in Nampula has not yet issued any statement, saying that it is still in the process of assessing the losses. There are however plenty of Renamo members who will claim anonymously that they are being persecuted by the ruling party and say the incident was politically motivated.
Nampula police spokesman Zacarias Nacute said that the protagonists were members of the public upset by the Renamo incursions in the centre and north of the country, adding that a railway locomotive was attacked early on Tuesday by Renamo elements in Malema district in the Nacala logistics corridor, but that no-one was injured.
