Mozambique: Inhabitants denounce insurgents in Macomia with local backing

The main deck of the Maputo-Catembe bridge arrived in Mozambique yesterday, and assembly is expected to begin today once preparations initiated shortly after mooring are completed.
The ship docking at the Port of Maputo at around 1.30 p.m. was greeted by celebrations including fireworks.
Yesterday, tests of the crane which will lift the modules up to the hanging cables to which the deck will be attached were completed, but further tests were still necessary, Maputo South Development Company’s Silva Magaia said.
The success of those tests will determine whether the process of placing the deck starts today.
The operation is forecast to last a month to 45 days, followed by finishing, safety certifications, painting against the maritime environment and some inevitable minor damage from handling.
The Maputo South chairman said that the arrival of the platform “is the last of the great phases of the project” and that within days or weeks the connection between the north tower next to Maputo Port’s Number Five quay and the Catembe side would be plain to see.
Meanwhile, work on other fronts is still paralysed by the refusal of some Nwankakana market vendors to leave the area, and there is also an electric power transmission line traversing the area to be moved.
These obstacles, Magaia said, could determine the fulfilment or otherwise of deadlines for the work to be completed this year, but efforts were underway with the Maputo Municipal Council of Maputo and Mozambique Electricity aiming at clearing the work area soon.
