Mozambique: Northern provinces on alert for heavy rain from Tuesday
Armed men yesterday raided the police station in the village of Nametil, Mogovolas district, Nampula province, Notícias reports.
According to Mogovolas administrator Ernesto Bombi, the attackers killed one policeman and seriously injured another, who was immediately transported to the Nampula Central Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Bombi said that the amount of military equipment, including firearms and ammunition, stolen in the incident, was still to be quantified.
Notícias reports that two individuals “in Arab dress” went into the Nametil PRM District Command yesterday morning to file a complaint against a third person in their company, allegedly for robbery.
One inside the police station, they drew pistols with which they fired on the two agents on duty. One lost his life in the scene, while the other was seriously injured.
Police officers outside the premises ran to the station to confront the trio, who fled at sped with the stolen firearms.
Bombi said the attack was a surprise and did not allow a certain tally of the attackers, and that “the shots heard were initially mistaken for police action against evildoers, but the sequence of the same raised suspicions that it was something more serious”.
Bombi added that the population only found out there had been an attack in the early hours of yesterday, Sunday.
The scene was now calm, he said, although the possibility of a recurrence of such a dramatic incident was worrying residents, who feared for their safety given that the weapons stolen from the police station were now in the hands of the thieves.
