Mozambique Elections: Renamo office attacked in Chokwe - AIM
DW / The Renamo party Chimoio city political headquarters after the fire.
Arsonists burned down another Renamo office in the city of Chimoio, in central Mozambique’s Manica province, early on Tuesday morning (June 21) – the second such attack in the city in less than a month.
Less than three weeks ago, gunmen torched the Renamo’s Manica province poitical headquarters, located in the same city.
DW Africa was unable to contact the Chimoio Renamo delegate Manuel Zindoga for information or comment, but heard from two Chimoio residents, Zacarias Mussone and Agostinho Ngoma, of their surprise at the magnitude of the early morning blaze.
The two residents also lamented the fact that unknown individuals had taken to torching the offices of political parties in the region.
“We challenge the police to trigger mechanisms to capture these individuals and prevent other fires from occurring. If the perpetrators are found, they should be held accountable for the crimes already committed,” they said.
RENAMO did not present charges
Provincial police spokesperson Elcídia Filipe said that, as in the first case, which police finds very similar to this one, Renamo had not reported the incident to the police. “We are waiting for the complaint to initiate appropriate actions for the capture of the authors of this fire. Renamo must report these acts to the police in order for it to carry out investigations. Without any complaint, it is difficult to intervene. I repeat that the corporation has not received any complaint from Renamo, so that there is no leeway for the PRM to intervene.”
This second Renamo office fire comes as the Mozambican government has just announced it will send requests to the European Union, the Catholic Church and South Africa to mediate an end to Mozambique’s political and military crisis. The announcement was made by Jacinto Veloso, spokesman of the government delegation in the negotiations with Renamo and cited this Tuesday (June 21) by the newspaper O Pais, the main private daily newspaper in Mozambique.
Government announces submission of requests for mediation of military conflict
Jacinto Veloso, who was previously Minister of Security in Mozambique, said that the mediators would take part in preparations for the meeting between the head of the Mozambican state, Filipe Nyusi, and the leader of the country’s largest opposition party, the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Afonso Dhlakama.
President Filipe Nyusi said last Thursday (June 16) that he would accept the presence of mediators in the negotiations between the government and Renamo, setting an immediate end to the fighting as a priority.
Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama also announced on Friday (June 17) that he had reached consensus with the head of the Mozambican state on the need for peace by telephone, but that an end to armed clashes depended on “guarantees of security”.
