The deputy chairman of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the party’s candidate for the August elections, João Lourenço, this Sunday met President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique and, later, the secretary general of the Liberation Front Mozambique (Frelimo), Eliseu Machava.
Speaking to Frelimo members at the party’s national headquarters in Maputo, João Lourenço said that the two political forces must unite “in order not to be defeated”.
“Our strength lies in our unity. If we are united, he who is against us will not overcome us. They walk every day thinking about how to overthrow Frelimo and defeat the MPLA,” he warned.
Eliseu Machava said that João Lourenço was would be supported by Frelimo in the Angola presidential election.
“For our party, the candidate that the MPLA indicates is also the Frelimo candidate. We will support our candidate in the elections, because it is in the interest of the Mozambican people, and in the interest of the Angolan people, that the MPLA, who know the history of the Angolan people, continues to direct the destinies of the people,” he said.
Angolan Minister of Defence João Lourenço also met his Mozambican counterpart, Atanásio Mtumuke.
