Residents of the Massinga neighborhood in Marracuene are up in arms over a policeman who they say is using his office to intimidate them.
A meeting was held condemning agent Agostinho Chavane, who, after his plasma television was stolen last Saturday, and without investigating the robbery to any degree, reportedly detained and tortured five residents of Marracuene’s Massinga “A” district.
The young man in the video, one of the ‘suspects’, says he was tortured by the police officer in question and only managed to escape the cells on promising to find the money to buy the officer a new TV.
Dona Ana’s son, Meque, and another young man, Joao, had not had the same luck and were at the time of the meeting still detained in the cells of the Marracuene police station.
The arrests prompted residents of Massinga to demand the truth be established and the real thieves found and held accountable.
As our reporting team was departing, the block head (‘chefe de quarteirão’) was calming residents who were threatening to destroy the policeman’s home, because this was not the first time that he had acted this way, they claimed, and they were tired of his intimidation.
