DM / Beira District Government headquarters in Manga
More than 30,000 meticais in cash, mobile airtime and checks was stolen in a break-in at the new government offices on the former N6 in the Manga neighbourhood, Beira on Friday night the week before last week.
Beira District Administrator João Oliveira confirmed the loss during an interview with “Diário de Moçambique” and denied rumours that the break-in was internally orchestrated to sabotage the audit of the Regional Inspectorate of Finance.
Oliveira denies that his institution had received a note confirming an intention to audit the local government accounts.
“We would like to clarify that the information about the inspection is not true. Our entry books are available to all and can be consulted. Those in charge of the secretariat including the permanent district secretary are here, too, they can be heard.
“The District Government has not received, up to this point in time, any information from the inspection to inform us that we would have an audit, that supposedly leading to us creating a scheme to confuse public opinion and make some evidence disappear,” he said.
The burglars, who are still at large, broke one of the building’s windows to gain access, and raided the administration and finance office.
Among the missing items are a safe containing 11,951.5 meticais in cash, the deposits of companies competing to render services.
“Mcel airtime worth 13,000 meticais, certified checks for five and seven thousand meticais and two books of receipts from the District Development Fund were also lost,” Oliveira said.

He added that the local government had informed the police authorities as soon as the discovered the break-in, and the police had recovered the safe, which was opened and empty.
“The safe was found on the railway line near the institution, practically empty. The police from the 7th Police Station are doing everything possible to solve the crime, but so far have no detainees in connection with the case,” he said.
