Mourning came knocking on the doors of the Luís Cabral neighbourhood in Maputo city early yesterday morning, after a driver travelling on the EN4 from Matola to Maputo lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into the crowd at a party just a few metres from the road.
At the time of going to press, 23 people were confirmed dead and 31 wounded, five of them with head injuries and multiple fractures, and in a state described by the clinical director of Maputo Central Hospital Fárida Ursi as “critical”. A total of 17 injured were taken to HCM.
The less severely injured were taken to the General Hospital José Macamo, near the site of the incident, their condition was described as “out of danger”, some having been discharged during the day.
Violent death took some of the victims who, according to the police, were hit by the vehicle travelling at high speed after apparently having disobeyed a police order to stop at a check point about 200 metres from the crash site.
Some of the victims, who were mostly teenagers and young people, died immediately. Others lost their lives on the way to the HCM and José Macamo hospitals or shortly after arriving.
Police said the vehicle, a Volkswagen Amarok with the registration AFN 451 MP, was driven by a man identified as Alexandre M. da Conceição Monjane, who died at the scene of the accident.
Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi said at the close of the party Central Committee’s second session that he was deeply upset when he heard about the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning, adding that such accidents could be avoided if road users obeyed traffic rules.
He strongly condemned bad driving such as speeding and reckless overtaking, as well as poor pedestrian crossings. Nyusi expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims on behalf of the Central Committee, party militants, the entire Mozambican people and himself.
