This image remained untouched after the independence of the Country. Successive Mozambican governments have been promoting some actions, most important of which was the classification of the Island as a World Heritage Site in 1991.
Due to its geographical location and its importance in international trade routes, Ilha de Moçambique was elevated to the town on January 19, 1763, and on September 17, 1818, it was granted the status of a city, having the status of first capital of the colony of Mozambique.
