Mystery of Foreign Affairs exhibition
The starting point of the international exhibition "Mystery of Foreign Affairs" is a reflection on life among different cultures of twenty thousand Mozambican workers who worked and lived in the Democratic Republic of Germany (GDR). However, the project also aims, more broadly, to contribute to a reflection on the relations between Europe and Africa, in the past and present.
The first part of the exhibition took place in various parts of the city of Schwerin, Germany, between September and November 2017, with the participation of artists from Mozambique, Angola, South Africa and Germany. In this exhibition, the works of artists like Dito Tembe, Iris Buchholz Chocolate and Katrin Michel discuss the exchange relations between the Democratic Republic of Germany and Mozambican workers in Germany known as Madgermans. On the other hand, works by artists such as Matias Ntundo or Gemuce provide a revival of the colonial past, while the works of Edson Chagas and Zanele Muholi represent the presence and the question of stereotypes and cultural attributions in today's world.
The second part of the exhibition will take place in two venues in Maputo, Camões - Portuguese Cultural Center and Fortaleza de Maputo, and will be open between June 14 and July 27, 2018. In Maputo, the exhibition will include two works on Namibia: Towards Memory, by Katrin Winkler, a video and research project that emerged from a collaboration with Namibian women who were sent as children to Germany in 1979 during the liberation and anti-apartheid struggle in their country. The second work is titled Namibia Today, by Laura Horelli, and recalls the edition of the homonymous newspaper printed in the then GDR.
In Maputo, works by Jorge Dias, Maimuna Adam, Gemuce, Dito Tembe, Luís Santos, Matias Ntundo, Iris Buchholz Chocolate, Edson Chagas and Katrin Michel are also presented. Through different means, from installation to painting, through sculpture and video, the exhibition aims to contribute to a work of memory on the common past, as well as a reflection on the current relations between Africa and Europe.
