Exposition of “The Shade of the mango tree”, directed by Angelo Abu
Brazilian illustrator Angelo Abu, responsible for the designs of the covers of 15 books by the writer Mia Couto for the Brazilian publishing company Companhia da Letras, was in Mozambique last year to deepen his work. At the occasion, he offered illustration workshops for children and adolescents at the Hakumana Center, a philanthropic institution located in the outskirts of Maputo. At the time, the children told stories, which were recorded by the artist, in the shade of a hose. The project consists of showing children's illustrations, directed and treated by Angelo Abu, accompanied by audio recordings of the stories narrated by these children and young people. The artist should count on the support of the publisher Companhia das Letras to prepare some of the material and transform it into a children's book. The Brazilian artist hopes to be able to provide financial returns for the Mozambican children involved in the project in the form of copyright and self-esteem. The exhibition of the CCBM presents a great opportunity to spread the work of the important Brazilian illustrator, in turn linked to a renowned Mozambican writer, and share the great wealth of tradition and oral creation of Mozambique.
