Chico António – Acoustic Session singing and guitar
Chico Antonio was born in Magude,a district of Maputo province in the southern part of Mozambique, he grew up in boarding school and he was 9 years old (1967) when he became a soloist in a 60 piece choir at S. Jose de Lhanguene and he started learning how to play the trumpet. Between 1979 and 1992 he was part of a band that composed music with a base in Mozambican traditional rhythms such as: Grupo experimental n°1, RM (Radio Mozambique where he toured Italy, France, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Zimbabwe, Angola, Guine Conakry ,among others). In 1990 he won the RFI (Radio France International) Decouvertes prize where he was given bursary for piano lessons. He considers Manu Dibango ,a mentor who has advised him to finish his studies and go back home and contribute to the improvement of local music, by researching what he played and Mozambican traditional rhythms. Since the recording of his first CD “Amoya”(1991) in France, Chico has been working with modern rhythms and instruments he’s urging the younger generation to pave this way.
